Athletes that already withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics

With the positive coronavirus case starting to take place in the Olympic Village, the list of athletes forced to withdraw in Tokyo 2020 is only likely to be longer.

Here, the PA news agency keeps track of the names of the star which the virus has reduced their dreams of competing in the Japanese capital.

Coco Gauff
Unlike her peers, the 17-year-old tennis player seemed to be very disappointed to leave the game at seven days due to a positive test. Gauff wrote on Twitter: “I am disappointed to share the news that I tested positive for covid and that I will not be able to play at the Olympics Games in Tokyo. It has always been my dream to represent the USA at the Olympics, I have hope there will be more opportunities to make this a reality in the future.


Johanna Konta
Konta’s bad summer season continued when he showed signs of infection and contracted the virus. The number one British player was forced to leave Wimbledon and split because of one of her team testing positive. Konta described it as a “heartbreaking truth”, adding: “Representing Team GB at the Rio Olympics Games in 2016 was one of the most memorable memories of my career.


Alex De Minaur
The Australian number one was forced to back off after returning a positive sample from one of the two mandatory pre-departure tests before his departure began in his home country. He became the first member of the Australian team to test positive. According to Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman of Australia, De Minaur, who was to have competed in singles and doubles, was left “shattered” by the news.

Dan Evans
When he indicated he did not want to go to Tokyo, British number one Evans changed his mind – only to be struck down by the virus. Announcing his withdrawal last week, Evans wrote on social media: “Unfortunately I tested positive recently for Covid-19. So I will not be able to prepare and ready myself for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. I am very disappointed and currently self-isolating according to the directives issued by the government.
